The
Vision Of the Founder
** 1978 **
Mr Geoffrey William Griffin ** 1989 **
It was way
back in 1959 when Mr. Griffin, a government Administrator at the time , was
struck
by the plight of the street kids who were roaming around
the various towns after losing contact with their families who were either
displaced or died in the fight waged by various parties in the pre-independent
Kenya.
With no readily available resources to
undertake charitable work of such magnitude, Starehe was born next to the
Carrier Corps (the present Kariokor) with only the three tinned structures which
served as the classes where the young hopefuls learnt the 3Rs at day time and
slept at night.
Mr Geturo and Mr Gikubu are the other pillars of the
centre that complete the Circle of the Centre's foundation-The three fathers of
Starehe.
It is this humble beginning that gave birth to the Starehe that we know today, a
centre not only of a national pride but of an International reputation.
Among his other achievements, he was called upon
to start the National Youth Service (NYS) in the early 70's , a big national
enterprise which was geared towards developing the youth in the country and
preparing the undergraduates before finally being admitted in the various
National universities. This was a great success and he was the director of NYS until
his retirement age of 55 years.
He earned one of the countries prestigious awards, MBS which
stands for
Moran of the Burning Spear.
On the door to Mr. Grifins office lies an inscription that echo the basis of the
centre's foundation: "Happy are those who dream
dreams and are ready to pay the price to make
them come true"
