More Than just A School

To many of the boys who go through Starehe, the institute is more than just a learning instrument. The institutes learning policies are geared towards developing the complete human personality.

Starehe is a charitable institution. For most boys, it accepts many parental responsibilities as well as educational ones and remains open all round the year (some boys don't have homes where they can go back to, for others its too expensive to afford the trip).
The institution also maintains a holiday property at the Kenyan coast - Mombasa, to which 90 boys go each vacation. Apart from enjoying the coastal weather and collecting shells along the coast, the young men are treated to the rich history of the development of the institute.  I loved these stories.
Activities at the camp include swimming in the open ocean under the supervision of the nation-wide qualified school swimmers, Archery and challenging Dae ( the director ) to a game of Badminton - his most favourite sport.
After the final year exam, candidates who do not get a chance to join one of the local universities are welcomed to join a college within the institute. Offered at the college are Computer science studies, Accounts packages among other career oriented  subjects.
For school leavers there is a hostel where they can stay for up to one year, still being maintained by Starehe, until they move to university or find jobs. There is a good career guidance and placement service.

These among the many activities that take place within the centre's setup just make Starehe a unique institute. And to many of the disadvantaged boys who go through this centre of learning, starehe is nothing short of a paradise.
